New link-building currency: link target lists

April 29, 2008 – 9:52 am by Hugo Guzman

I have a colleague at Zeta Interactive who prides himself on finding new and inventive ways to secure inbound links for our clients. His name is Bob Generale, and he is definitely one of the unsung heroes that has led to Zeta’s surge of success with SEO clients.

Recently, he approached me with a novel approach to bartering with webmasters and content owners for the sites he targets:

Bartering an inbound link in exchange for a list of link-building targets.

I know, it sounds crazy, and half of you are probably wondering what in the hell I’m talking about. Basically, when one of his contacts is balking at the idea of adding a new link to one of our clients, Bob offers to deliver them a list of 10 or so easy targets that the contact can pursue in order to secure links of their own.

I love it!

Leveraging link-building expertise to get a tangible inbound link in return. And in speaking with Bob, he assures me that the time and effort needed to put together a list of a solid targets rarely exceeds five minutes.

So the next time you reach a stalemate with a potential link source, remember to offer up your link-building smarts as a fair trade. It’s the new link exchange.

Props to Bob for flexing his creative muscle in the link building space.

  2. That is an interesting idea. Clearly, this only works if your link targets are interested in SEO already and are not very in-tune with link building of there own. Of course, trading IP for a link is like printing money (especially if that IP takes 5 minute and the link is of high quality).

I wonder if there are other forms of intellectual property out there that can be offered to good sites without SEO interests of their own and dont really care about link target lists.

  3. Good point about intellectual property in general. There are probably many hidden opportunities for link building in that regard.
